LEGO® Toy Story™

Kidco Inc

In 1980, Dinky had been bought by Airfix and was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. In an attempt to stay afloat, Airfix seemingly decided to try and grab some of the Matchbox 1/64-scale market, with a range of small-scale Dinky-branded models produced in Hong Kong by Universal Products.

It appears that when these Dinky models were produced, the Universal cars were already available in the US under the KIDCO brand as "Tough Wheels," with the KIDCO logo cast into the bases. The Dinky versions had these altered, so they carried the then-current Dinky Toys logo instead.

Airfix only licensed part of the Universal range, 20 cars in total, plus some motorbikes. There are plenty of other Universal castings, like the '64 Ford Mustang and '54 Corvette that weren't part of the Dinky range, and don't exist with the Dinky Toys logo on the bases. The Dinkies were issued in Blister packs with simple orange or green card backs and the Dinky Toys logo
